Making soup

Saturday, January 14, the youth and a few of the leaders spent the afternoon making chicken soup and cookies to take to the shut ins from our church. They had a rather interesting time learning to prepare the ingredients from scratch. I doubt that any of them have ever cut up and boned a chicken before.

After we got everything ready, we divided into three groups and delivered the soup, cookies, and a hand written encouragement card. The kids would go up to the door and make the delivery. We would wait for a while, then got tell them they had to move onto the next house or we would never get done. Several of the kids want to go back and just spend time talking to the people.

It is very hard to say who got the most out of the experience. Whether it were the kids, the people they visited, or the leaders, who can say? I am very proud of our kids.

Thanksgiving

Well, we made it through Thanksgiving. The youth group did not meet last Wednesday night, but our church held a Thanksgiving service. Can't wait to next Wednesday night for youth group to get back into full swing. Looking forward to Christmas time, Winter retreat, and New Years. Don't know what we will do, but it will be fun!!

We took some of the teens down to the local rescue mission Friday night to serve a meal to the guys there. It was a different kind of experience for them and, they seemed to enjoy doing it. We have a new youth director now who isn't much older that the kids. He is 25. What a difference have a young youth leader makes.

Wednesday update

Wednesday, day three of our mission trip adventure… “oh, what a difference a day makes!” Yesterday ended with some frustration (from interpersonal relationships with each other and with those we were working with) and fatigue (from trekking through the city…depending on who you asked anywhere from 6-20 miles! Actual distance: unknown.) Last night we gathered together with 3 other teams that are working in the Baltimore/DC area for worship and sharing. Good times!

Today, we had another great day at the pool with the Rec Center kids. After lunch, and back at the Rec Center, we took pictures of the kids and had them make fun foam foto frames… they loved it. The workers were asking if they could get their own foam-framed pictures... That’s how good they were! We, again, were not able to teach our planned lesson because of timing and time constraints, but were allowed ample opportunities to befriend and spend time with the kids (ages 5-13).

We made grilled cheeses for dinner at the church… yum… and prepared 50 PB&J’s and bologna and cheese sandwiches to hand out @ Tent City (a “park” for Baltimore’s homeless). We had a very good experience talking with the people there and handing out the health kits. Thanks for those of you who helped with donations (water bottle, washcloth, deodorant, soap, toothbrush and toothpaste, and a granola bar). Apparently candy is a hot commodity… Who knew!

Tomorrow we will have opportunity to participate in a community outreach in a local park and finish some work projects at the Rec Center. Please be in prayer for us as we continue to serve.

Day two. Plan: Pool with kids in the am, then lunch, then our “VBS” in the afternoon. Reality: Long walk to pool through downtown Baltimore (which was VERY nice) with 60+ kids, pool time, long walk back to the Recreation Center, quick lunch out of the van, “Scavenger Hunt” in the Inner Harbor with the Rec center kids (more walking…), return to the Rec center, all are exhausted (Rec center kids, mission team…) and, therefore we nixed our VBS.

Our team worked very hard today seeking opportunities to speak to kids about Jesus by playing with them in the pool, talking with them on the walk to and from the pool, giving piggyback rides and holding hands of nervous little ones, playing Old Maid and Go Fish, taking initiative for kids’ safety (just a reminder, this is a middle school team). We gave out Wordless Bracelets yesterday; these bracelets simply tell the salvation message through colored beads. I heard several conversations today with kids, reviewing and reinforcing that message. God’s Word is being spoken and heard this week. Glory to God!

Well, the first day has come to an end. well, it will when I finally go to bed. We started off with a great plan, but that went out the window before we hit interstate 95. The theme for this week is "Whatever." So we are ready for whatever God sends our way. We went in looking to hang out with the kids and then do games and a Bible lesson in the afternoon. The kids are now going to the pool every morning. We decided to paint the rest rooms. They were not very pleasant. We first had to clean them, then paint them. Everyone work well together and Dina did the ultimate cleaning job.

In the afternoon we had to wait until 4:00 to do what we planned. We have several people who are now on our hearts and prayed for tonight. Tomorrow we are suppose to go to the pool with them. This will be a very interesting situation and we ask prayer as we work with the kids. Once again there are several that we have met and want to see them come to know Jesus Christ as their savior. We and trained hard and have entered the ring for round two. The bell is about to ring and we are ready to start the fight once again.

Well, we all made it home. Last night we stayed at the Bahia Mar Beach Resort. I forgot to tell you the name of the place. This morning we walked on the beach, swam in the ocean or the pool, and made ready to go to the airport. It was an unusually easy and pleasant trip. Only a few hiccups happened along the way. When we got to the airport it was discovered that Mrs. Jacobsen’s cell phone was in one of the girl’s pocket book. It got a free ride to Newport News. Chuck is going to mail it back to her. After we made it through security we noticed one of the team being led off to the side and a security guard was carrying her carry on bag. Apparently she forgot and packed all of her shampoo and such in the carry on bag. It had to be checked onto the plane. Paul was very nice to one of the security guards and gave him a nice little pocket knife as a present.

The most interesting thing that happened was the little Chinese lady who was carrying a cat with her. Chuck talked to her and noticed a lot of scratches and cuts on her arms and legs. Apparently the cat that was a rather large Tom did not want to get into its traveling case. When we got on the plane, guess who was sitting in my seat. I got to sit with the cat. The travel case would not fit in the overhead and it would not fit under the seat. The flight was held up until the cat problem was fixed. The cat and its owner left the plane and $75.00 later they reentered the plane with a much smaller cat box. Aren’t airlines helpful? They are willing to sell you a $10.00 cat box that the poor car just did fit in for $75.00 so the poor animal could ride with us. Betsy Saunders asked her why she didn’t just by the cat a ticket and let it sit on the seat. She had. It cost $60.00 for the cat just to ride under the seat.

We did get to talk to her a lot on the way back. She asked if we were Baptist and we got to tell her who we were, what we were doing, and best of all what we believed and what it takes to be saved.

When we reached Newport News, I helped her get her carry on bag and cat in its falling apart box out. I was going to help her carry her items off the plan, but she had to wait for her original cat box to be given back to her. By now she really didn’t want to see that box again. When she got all her stuff together and started up the ramp to the terminal, she dropped to poor cat on its head. Paul helped her get her belongings into the terminal. When the Saunders and I were leaving she was getting into the car behind us and we got to say goodbye to her. It was really a nice ending to a wonderful trip. We had one more opportunity to help someone and to tell them about Jesus. I don’t know if I should ask prayer for the poor cat or not. Once again thank you for all of your support and prayers. Sunday Night

Well things have finally slowed down. I finally was able to post Saturday’s update. Sharon called me right away to let me know I had said the Haitian patty had heroin, not heron in it. I couldn’t blame that one on the keyboard. I have the best Spell Checker around.

Chuck, Pat, and I believe Amanda went to Sunday school. Chuck to speak to the adults about what it took to get ready to put on the VBS; I believe Amanda taught the little ones. The rest of us went over after we checked out and packed the vans. Several of the kids who were at the VBS came today and Pastor Mark gave a Bible to each one who were saved during the week. There were over 60 people there today. The place was packed. The teens went aside for their own lesson when Pastor Mark was ready to preach. Today’s service was not in English.

After the service, we all had lunch at the church. I really believe I should stay away from Haitian food or I will be twice as big as I am. Afterwards there were many goodbyes. The group had made many friends and they will be missed. We loaded up the van and headed to the beach for our last night here. Then the beach came out to meet us. Rainstorms in Florida can be rather intense. In some spots, the water was up to the running board. Several of those small, very expensive cars found out you cannot race on water.

We got to the hotel and finally all the rooms were ready. Some of us had to wait 45 minutes for our room to be ready. We have a rather nice view out our window. Hopefully everyone will get plenty of rest tonight. I really doubt that they will. The Jacobsen’s were invited to stay at the Hotel with us. A group of us walked down to Bubba Gump’s to eat. I have never eaten there before.

This will probably be the last post until we get home. Please continue to pray for us as we make our way to the airport. Pray that there will be no hiccups along the way. Several of the group have colds. Pray that God give healing and comfort as we fly.

We miss our loved ones and will be home soon. Thank you for taking the time to stop by and read the updates. I am greatly humbled to have had this opportunity. Satuday's Events

This post is late because the internet did not work Saturday night.

Today we went back to the church to finish cleaning. Chuck, J P, and Paul went to finish hanging the doors. The last one was wrong so they were not able to finish. About noon, we all went to a Haitian restaurant to eat. We started with a thing that is like a sweet potato, which is battered and fried. That was good. Then we had either white rice with a black bean sauce or muddy looking rice with peas in it. That was rather tasty. We had our choice of spicy meatballs, fried port chunks, chicken, goat, or conk. Conk is a large snail. Someone got it, but we do not know whom. Afterwards we went too little Haiti and walked around. J P was treated to a Haitian specialty. It was a pastry square about 2 ½ inches square and about 1 ½ inches thick. Imagine a very light and fluffy pastry that flakes when you bite into it. Also imagine when you bite into it you find Red Heron inside it. It was spicy and fishy, but overall, it was very good.

Afterwards we went to the Jacobsen’s and had supper there. J P caught a really big carp. The only picture I got was of its tail after J P lost his grip on it and it slithered back into the canal. John Bedford caught two turtles.

After all this excitement, The Mark and his wife gave their testimony. The team was greatly moved by it. After that, we returned to the hotel where we have to get ready to check out and be at the church by 11:00.

VBS final

The last day for VBS has come to an end. There were many promises made, and goals set. We had a few disappointments. Some goals were met and even a couple of surprises. And, there were even a few tense moments thrown in.

Chuck and a group went to finish installing the doors. Another group went to the Jacobsen’s to do more projects. Another group stayed at the hotel to do laundry. We went to the Jacobsen’s to eat and while we were there, J P Blake caught a bass behind their house. Funny thing, I had the video camera running, but for some reason it cut off when he hooked the fish. So, you will have to ask J P how big the fish was. I did get a picture of the Cuban lizard he caught.

We got to the church and made ready for tonight. The team had every thing ready. It was a slow start. But they keep coming. Several new faces were there. The word was out. Pastor Chuck would eat a goldfish if we had fifty people, but we just didn’t make it, we only reached 42. One little boy sat in the corner with his head down. He was mad. He had wanted to stay home and watch wrestling. In the closing exercises he wanted to know when we were going to do this again.

We passed the goal for the offering. They gave over $130.00. Pastor Mark would eat a goldfish. Mark’s son Caleb would also eat one. We really wanted to see Chuck eat one, too.

The kids brake up into their groups and everything is running smoothly. Well, I thought they were running smoothly. One of the team is outside pacing back and forth. They have run out of a very important piece of material. It is the little card they use to ask them if they are saved, do they have questions, or are they ready to get saved. Pastor Mark had to run home and run off more copies. They only had ten minuets left in group time and they really needed those cards. Time was running out. Pastor Mark made it with only minutes to spare and they used the cards go through the plan of salvation and have them check if they had questions. Two young ladies, one in middle school group, the other in high school checked that they had questions. Each were taken aside and talked to. Two young ladies who happen to be sisters, one in middle school and the other in high school, accepted Christ tonight. We would like to have seen more saved, but we rejoice in those who were saved. I asked if any goals were set and JP summed it up best; all of them.

The program is coming to an end and we all gathered for the last time. Pastor Mark and Caleb ate their goldfish and even Chuck eats his. The kids huddle in the middle for the final team chant, then gather so each group can run out through the banner to face the world. Some were already saved and some are not. Our hearts go out to those who left not knowing Christ as their saver and we pray for them. But, one thing is for certain, there are eleven young people who now face what the world will throw at them with Jesus in their hearts.

Thursday night update

Today it rained. It stopped, and then it rained again. We divided into work groups again and a couple of the groups went to finish what they started yesterday. It rained again. Chuck’s group went to finish hanging doors for a couple from Mark’s church. The wife had just come home after having surgery. She had had a rather rough time with it. Several of the team had visited her in the hospital. I got to drive the van again today and I didn’t get lost. But, I did go to the wrong store. The guys had just gotten the door and jam removed from the bathroom when they realized that the new door swung the wrong way. So it was time for a field trip. We had to return the wrong doors and get the right ones. That took a bit of prayer because she could not find the receipt. We also had to purchase the new doors with her credit card. After calling several people and they verified that we had returned two doors they let us use her card to get the doors. It rained again. The work group was not able to finish installing the doors today.

VBS went well tonight. Chuck told them if they get 50 people to come, he will eat a live goldfish. Pastor Mark said if they raise $100 in offering, he will eat a live goldfish. We had 46 tonight and the offering reached over $70. I think if we only get 45 tomorrow night, then Chuck should only have to eat half a goldfish. The offering will go for bible translation of the Old Testament for the Haitian people.

It was very exciting watching tonight. There was a lot of excitement and every one listened well. Afterwards, Steven (one of the guys who got saved last night) and Cedric went with us to get ice cream. I walked in and told the lady behind the counter that we had 30 people getting ready to come in. “Yea, right!” she replied. It was about fifteen minutes before closing and they were rather surprised. It was an enjoyable time. Her husband and daughter came in and the daughter wanted to know if we were on a field trip. We got to tell them what we were doing an invited them to come Friday night. I’ve developed a cold today, but Mrs. “Doctor” Jacobsen found out and I have been doused with things I have no idea what they are. Apparently I’m not the only one she got a hold of. They say what ever it was she gave me works.

We again thank you for your many prayers. We have seen the results of those prayers time and time again. And, we will continue seeing the results as we continue.

Wednesday night

Well it is Wednesday and our week is half over. Today we divided into four groups. One went to the Jacobsen’s to do work around the house. Another group went out to paint a room for a lady. Chuck's group went to hang doors. And, the last group stayed at the church to clean up and get ready for tonight. I stayed with the cleaning group. I got to drive the van to Wal-Mart. I got lost. But, I broke the man mold and stopped for directions. I let Pat go in and ask for them. I got to drive the van to the Jacobsen’s house. I got lost again. I’m not really that bad at finding places.

After what happened last night everyone was praying for tonight. I didn’t know what to expect. Some were praying for more people to show up. Some were praying that some of the older ones would get saved. All of us were praying that God would move in hearts. We did not have time to gather together and pray so everyone gathered in their groups and prayed by themselves.

Music is playing and we are just waiting. “Lord, tonight is in your hands, let your will be done.” They begin to arrive. Three together, then a boy who had only been there Monday night, then the girl who told a young man named Steven to turn off his Devil music in the church, and then more come in. The room is filling. In walks a young man and his friends. He takes his normal place over by my chair at the computer. There are 41 present! The program is in full swing now. Every one breaks up and goes to their classes. The leaders step back and watch our youth at work.

The high schoolers are outside doing games. Once again Steven is setting off to the side. Once again one of the leaders goes over and encourages him to join in the games. He finally joins in. We walk back into the building and the middle school team is out in the hall together. What’s wrong someone asks. They reply four in their group have just accepted Christ. The high school group comes out looking rather stunned. Two in their group have just accepted Christ. Steven is one of them. The elementary group comes out and one more of their group has accepted Christ. Seven new believers now walk this earth. Now we pray for their growth and protection.

The conversation during the trip back to the hotel reflected on car washes, yard work, and working in the hot sun; how small that price paid seems now.

Please continue to pray for the team and the people who come out tomorrow.

Tuesday Night

Today started with many fears and hopes. The final total last night was 41, I had missed six people. We hoped they would bring their friends tonight. But, we could not really hold many more than we had last night. Our biggest hope was also our biggest fear. We divided up into three teams today. One group went to the Jacobsons to do yard work and try to get their car running. One group went into a neighborhood to invite people to come out to the VBS. Another group stayed at the church to get ready for tonight, and then they would go out and pass out invitations also. So it was with great excitement that we waited to get started tonight.

The word came down, they are here! The music begins and we started singing. Three people walk in. We keep singing and eventually two more come in. The program is getting into full swing and we have less than 15 total. Oh the disappointment starts to set in. But, that’s okay, many came late last night. They will be here before 7:30. We divide into the different groups and still no one else has come.

It is now 7:39 and a car pulls up and 4 youth walk in. Another car pulls in and 4 more enter the building. Six teenagers get out of another car. “Oh, I’m so sorry for being late”, one girl says as she enters the building and heads to the check in table. Paul is smiling so much that he really does look like Santa. Our hearts are soaring. 31 is the final count. The 3 year old little girl joins in with the other little ones as they play games and listen to the Bible story. The teens are screaming and laughing out side. Every one gathers for the closing exercise and listen to Chuck as he speaks. The heads are bowed and the eyes are closed. “Who wants to be on God’s team?” Chuck asks. One little hand goes up, then a second. Two little girls walk out of the room, and then, two new born little ladies walk back into the room. The night comes to an end, we turn off the lights, and head to the hotel to get ready to once again face the joys, sorrows, and victories which are before us.

Monday night

As this day comes to an end, I just sit here and wonder. We were prepared and ready for little kids. What we got were 35 total with 25 of them being high schoolers and one was 21 years old. Every one worked well. Some of the team may have been just a little shocked. The day started with a lot of running around and buying items we needed. Several of the team went with Mark Jacoben to give out flyer's door to door. This was a lot different from giving out flyer's back home. When we were getting ready to go back to the hotel, Chuck got a phone call that Mark's car had broken down and we had to go pick them up. After we left VBS, Mark had not gotten his car home yet. The funny thing is, someone at the hotel had offered us a car he wanted to give to the ministry the day before. This is in the Lord's hand and we know that He will work it out.

Some of the teens were a little down before the start of VBS because they had been told by someone not to expect more than three kids. They were afraid that just a few kids who were already involved in the church would come. When they saw the people lining up to register, they were greatly encouraged. Every one who came got involved and seemed to have a good time. I am almost afraid to ask that people pray that all come back tomorrow and bring their friends and relatives. The main room where we meet was completely full. One young man while doing the hand motions to a song knocked part of a poster off the wall.

Please continue to pray for us, and as Paul Saunders said, our teens did a great job and we are very proud of them.

Monday Morning

This morning we gather material for VBS. The teens were up late last night sitting in the hall way making posters. They sang "One" last night and every one seemed to like learning the song. God has worked mightily already. The Haitians seem really open. Before the service ended last night we had an open prayer session. It was exciting praying this way. Not every one could understand what everyone prayed, but we all new what our hearts desired. God has no problem understanding.

Sunday Morning

Well, we made it. Chuck and JP to fly down around 5:00. When we left at 8:00 they were still waiting for their flight. They were to get the vans because we would get here about 10 minutes before they close. When we reached Atlanta, Chuck and JP were waiting for us. When we reached Fort Lauderdale, they had to run to rent the vans. We were just a little bit early and they made it. We got to the hotel about 2:00. Over all it was a good trip. No problems during the flight and no luggage lost. And we didn't lose anyone! The beds are very nice. We are now having breakfast and getting ready for church.

Strange break out

There seems to have been a breakout of strange pink birds in the last couple of days. They were noted gathering in several yards Sunday night. On one incident I heard that the homeowners tried to drive them off with squirt guns, but I don't know if their attempts were successful or not. I also hear that insurance can be purchased to prevent them from gathering in one's yard. And, also for a small fee they can be persuaded to gather else where.

The mission team is still hard at work raising funds for our summer trip to South Florida. The Lord gave us a perfect day for our car wash. Thanks to all who came out to support us and to have their car washed. We had a successful day. Once again, thanks!

2007 Car-b-que

The mission team just finished its part in the 3rd Annual Car-b-que.
All of the team members worked really hard and we are very proud of
them. Thanks also to the parents who helped out with the cooking and
serving of food. This was a very successful afternoon for the mission team. The Car-b-que was a great opportunity to talk with people who have never been to our church. It was exciting just watching various individuals off to the side talking together with our visitors. My son and I were very happy to see a friend that he invited at the show and were thrilled when his motorcycle won first place. Thanks to all who came out to support this event. Taco Dinner

We just completed our first fund raiser dinner and it went really well. I believe this is the first time we did tacos. We also raised over $1,000. At times, when we think about how much money we have to raise and how little time we have, it is overwhelming. It seems that with the first commitment to do one of these trips the enemy begins his opposition. But our God has seen us through before and He is able to meet our needs again. I ask prayer for all of our team members and especially for Pastor Chuck and Pat. This is a really big responsibility for both of them. Pray that God will meet the financial needs, for Chuck and Pat as they prepare to lead this trip, safety for each member as they work to raise the funds needed, and safety as we go.

A special thanks to the parents and kids who worked very hard to make this diner work. Some of the parents showed skills that we did not know they had. Many of the middle and high school youth also helped out. We are really proud of how our youth are more than willing to help out with ministries like this. Some of them have already been on a summer mission trip and others are too young to go. Hang in there guys, soon enough you will be old enough and we look forward to that time when you can also go.

Mexico 2005

You took me to a place I didn’t want to go.
You put people in my life I didn’t want to know.

Spring Fling

We held our Spring Fling Saturday and had a lot of fun. I don't know how many people were there, but we gave away over 400 free hot dogs and over 600 cans of soda. We also had drawings where we gave away 4 bicycles. We had a rock climbing wall, inflatable rides, pony rides, police dog demonstration, and games of skill. It had rained the night before, but that just added to the fun of the hay ride. Where else can kids have a hay ride and go muding at the same time?

Here are a couple of pictures from our trip to Honduras where we spent time in several children's homes and our trip to Mexico where we built a house for a family of six.

This is the second day after starting this blog. I had to start over. I forgot to remember my settings to log in to my original one.

Saturday April 28 we are having our Spring fling at Denbigh Baptist Church. Everything is free. It runs from 3:00 to 6:00. We have several games to play and rides to ride and all the food is free. I pray we have a sunny day. It's a lot of work, but it is a lot of fun.

Well we had our first leaders meeting to plan for our 3rd summer missions trip. We have lots to do, but our God has everything already planned out. My first task was to set up a blog so we can update everyone. My first concern was to find a Blog with a spell checker built in.

Join with us in prayer, praise, and worship as we get ready for our Summer Missions Trip to a Haitian church in South Florida.

We are only able to take 15 teens this year and need to raise $19,000 for this trip.

Our first big fund raising event will be our Car-b-que on May 20 from 2:00 to 6:00 at our church. Admission is free and open to all.
